There is nothing more impressive than an unregulated backyard fireworks display to get the ol' heart pumping. Dani and I went to Aunt Pati's house with all the family and had a huge spread of food. It's interesting, I knew Daniela liked mayo with her food, but not to the extent that I witnessed. I think I heard, "Everything tastes good with mayo!" about 20 times that night with a glaze of pure joy over her eyes. I case you didn't catch it, they like their mayonaise down here. Which, along with milk, comes in a bag. So back to the fireworks, there were stands selling EVERYTHING you could think of along the road. Mortars, bottle rockets, m-80's. You name it, they had it. Now I spent quite a few summers with my cousins in Montana so I feel like I know a thing or two about fireworks. So I saunter up to the table with a handful of dollars thinking I'm gonna go to town on buying a bag full of finger-scorchers. Then Daniela's cousin, Daniel leans over and says, "Don't waste your money on buying to many fire works. We have great neighbors." So instead I settle on a few huge bottle rockets and about 200 firecrackers. At 12 O'clock the sky around us literally explodes. I'm serious. We were in the back yard with our puny bottle rockets while the neighbors were launching balls of fire into the sky with drunken abandon. It was beautiful. 360 degrees of serious fireworks all at the same time. I understand why Daniel was telling me not to waste my money, we couldn't have been treated to a more personal, intense show if we tried. The only problem that I noticed was that when I tried to walk, all of the flashing lights and sound made me a little disoriented and I wobbled all over the place. And no it wasn't the beer! We'll try to get some pictures up soon. Today we should be going into Montevideo for a little walk and to see Pati and Jorge's sailboat. -Jay

I heard that if you light a bottle rocket and hold in your hand and then THROW it into the air..... that it's got a high likely hood of starting a field on fire... OR even better throw a "dud" mortar into a bonfire you might have a chance of getting NAILED in the neck with the "dud" mortar that went off.... So I hear...
Glad you had an amazing new year!!
I went on a long walk today and enjoyed it very much. Zeke is punking me and making me wait to eat until he is ready to let me eat. I liked it better when I was an only child and got to do any and everything I wanted, when I wanted to do it. I have to mind my manners here and listen to big Jay too! I still sneak up on the couch and sleep at night!
Are those piles of wood I see behind you and your firecrackers!?!
Sounds like you had a great New Year, except for witnessing the mayo slop fest (yuck!!). I'd imagine that getting "lit" on patricia beer didn't hurt either (good stuff). Also read online about Carnival in Montevideo kicking off it's first parade today, so send pictures if you can. I'll make sure to send down some Mobile Mardi Gras Moonpies for Dani's clan to taste!
